San Sebastián, Basque Country, Spain
San Sebastián (Donostia in Basque) is a small coastal city in Spain's Basque Country with an extraordinary claim: more Michelin-starred restaurants per square kilometre than anywhere else on earth. It is also one of Europe's most beautiful seaside cities, with a perfect curved bay, two beaches, and a Belle Époque old town dense with pintxos bars.

Travel tips for San Sebastián
The pintxos golden hours are 12–2pm and 7–9pm when bars put out their fresh displays. Avoid eating between these times — the bread dries out and quality drops.
Txakoli wine (€2.50–€3.50 a glass) is poured from height to aerate it — a Basque ritual. Pair it with the cold seafood pintxos; switch to Rioja for the heartier hot dishes.
La Cuchara de San Telmo has no sign on the door (look for a tiny card), opens at 7:30pm for pintxos, and serves some of the best hot pintxos in the city — foie with apple and slow-cooked veal cheek.
Zurriola beach (Gros neighbourhood, 5 min walk over the bridge) is the surfing beach — bigger waves, younger crowd, excellent pintxos bars on Calle Bermingham.
The San Sebastián Film Festival (mid-September) is one of Europe's most glamorous — pick up tickets online 3 months ahead for screenings of competition films for €8–€12 per film.
