Rio de Janeiro, Brazil
Rio de Janeiro is one of the world's most dramatically beautiful cities, where granite mountains plunge directly into the Atlantic Ocean and baroque architecture meets samba rhythms on streets that have produced some of the 20th century's most resonant cultural exports: Carnival, bossa nova, capoeira, and football.

Travel tips for Rio de Janeiro
Use Uber exclusively for transport after dark — metered taxis at night carry safety risks. The Uber app works seamlessly and costs R$15–$40 for most city trips.
Visit Cristo Redentor on a Tuesday or Wednesday morning (arrive at 8am via cog train, R$90 return) before the afternoon crowds and cloud cover. Weekend afternoons are often obscured by mist.
Caipirinhas are national drinks but the quality varies enormously. At a traditional boteco (bar), order a classic with the house cachaça and fresh lime — avoid premixed bottles.
Ipanema has a gay-friendly section of the beach (Posto 8–9) that is welcoming to everyone — generally the most stylish stretch with the best bodies and the best people-watching.
Carnaval blocos (street parties) are free and much more authentic than the Sambódromo parades — Cordão da Bola Preta and Banda de Ipanema attract hundreds of thousands in their respective neighbourhoods.
Getting there
How to reach Rio de Janeiro
By Air
Galeão International Airport (GIG) is 20 km from Ipanema; BRT bus to Alvorada takes 55 min (R$9.50), then Metro. Taxi/Uber: 45 min, R$80–$120. Santos Dumont Airport (SDU) is downtown for domestic flights only.
By Train
No intercity rail. Within the city, the Metro (Line 1 and 2) covers Ipanema/Copacabana to the city centre. The BRT network extends to Barra da Tijuca.
By Road
Buses connect Rio to São Paulo (6h) and other Brazilian cities. Within the city, Uber is safe, reliable, and inexpensive — the standard way to move at night.
