Hampi, Karnataka, India
Hampi is one of the most extraordinary archaeological landscapes in the world — a 26 sq km UNESCO World Heritage Site where the ruins of the 14th–16th century Vijayanagara Empire are scattered across a surreal boulder-strewn landscape on the banks of the Tungabhadra River. The combination of dramatic temple architecture, ancient bazaars, and alien rock formations makes Hampi unlike any other destination in India.

Travel tips for Hampi
Rent a bicycle (₹100–150/day) or moped (₹300–400/day) from shops near Hampi Bazaar — the monument spread requires transport.
Climb Matanga Hill before 6 AM for sunrise — it is the best single viewpoint in Hampi and requires only 20 minutes of moderate climbing.
The Vittala Temple complex opens at 8 AM — arrive early before the heat and tour groups. Entry is ₹600 for foreigners, ₹40 for Indians.
Photography of the musical pillars is restricted — audio recordings are allowed. Be respectful of the site's fragility.
Hippie Island (Virupapur Gadde) is accessible by coracle from the south bank (₹30 per person) — the guesthouses here offer the most relaxed Hampi experience.
