Spiti Valley occupies a narrow strip of trans-Himalayan desert in the eastern corner of Himachal Pradesh — a landscape that looks more like the surface of Mars than anything you would expect in India. At an average elevation of 12,500 feet, it is higher than most Himalayan trek base camps, yet you drive through it. The Spiti River carves a steel-grey course through a 30 km-wide valley flanked by ochre and burgundy mountains streaked with mineral deposits. Dotted across this lunar terrain are 1,000-year-old Buddhist monasteries — Ki Gompa, Tabo, Dhankar — that have been places of continuous worship since before the Mughal Empire existed.

The Two Routes: Shimla vs Manali

Spiti Valley is accessible via two roads, each dramatically different in character. Most travellers do both — entering from one side and exiting from the other:

Route Comparison

  • 01Shimla–Spiti via NH-505 (Kinnaur Route): 420 km, road open year-round (with caution in winter). Passes through Sangla, Kalpa, Nako, Tabo, and Kaza. More dramatic river gorge sections. Slower but safer for first-timers.
  • 02Manali–Spiti via Rohtang Pass (NH-3): 200 km to Kaza, road open June–October only. Crosses Rohtang Pass (13,054 ft) and Kunzum Pass (14,931 ft). Faster but more challenging. Permits required for Rohtang.
  • 03Recommended loop: Enter via Shimla–Kinnaur route (3–4 days to Kaza), explore Spiti for 3–4 days, exit via Manali over Kunzum Pass (1 day). Total: 10–12 days.
  • 04Accommodation en route: Reckong Peo, Nako, Tabo, and Kaza all have guesthouses. Kaza is the valley's main hub with ATMs, food, and WiFi.

Must-Visit Monasteries & Villages

Spiti's monasteries are among the finest surviving examples of Tibetan Buddhist architecture outside Tibet. Here are the unmissable stops:

  • 01Tabo Monastery (10,760 ft) — Founded in 996 AD, the oldest continuously operating monastery in India. Called the "Ajanta of the Himalayas" for its 1,000-year-old murals. Monks still study and practice here.
  • 02Ki Gompa (13,668 ft) — Perched on a conical hill above the Spiti River, Ki is Spiti's largest monastery with 200+ monks. The view from the prayer hall at sunrise is one of India's finest.
  • 03Dhankar Fort & Monastery — A 12th-century fort monastery balanced on the edge of a cliff above the confluence of the Spiti and Pin Rivers. Now UNESCO-listed as a World Monument at Risk.
  • 04Langza Village (14,500 ft) — A tiny village with a giant Buddha statue overlooking the valley. Famous for marine fossils (ammonites) found in the fields — evidence that this was once an ocean floor.
  • 05Chicham Bridge — Asia's highest suspension bridge (13,596 ft), connecting Chicham village to the main valley. The gorge below is 150 metres deep.
  • 06Pin Valley National Park — Home to the elusive snow leopard, Siberian ibex, and Himalayan wolf. Full-day treks with forest department guides available from Sagnam village.

Bike vs Car: Which to Choose

A Royal Enfield Himalayan or Bullet 350 is the romantic choice, but if you're not an experienced mountain rider, a 4WD car (Innova, Bolero, or Scorpio with a local driver) is significantly safer. Roads in Spiti dissolve after monsoon rains and landslides happen without warning between July and August. If self-driving a car, choose a petrol vehicle — diesel can struggle with cold starts at altitude. Keep the tank full whenever possible; petrol stations are 80–100 km apart.

Best Time to Visit Spiti Valley

Spiti's extreme altitude and remote location means season selection is critical:

  • 01June — Roads just opening after winter. Snow still on Kunzum Pass. Cold nights (-5°C). Pristine landscapes, very few tourists.
  • 02July–August — Peak season. Both routes open. Lush green valleys along the lower Spiti. Monsoon risk on Manali route. Best for solo travellers and group trips.
  • 03September — Best weather window. Clear blue skies, stable roads, moderate temperatures. Most monasteries hold their annual festivals in September.
  • 04October — Late season. Kunzum Pass may close with early snowfall. Tabo route stays open until November. Dramatic autumn light on the mountains.
  • 05November–May — Both passes closed. Spiti accessible only via Kinnaur (Shimla route) with chains and weather-dependent driving. Only for experienced Himalayan travellers.

Packing for Spiti: What to Carry

Spiti's altitude, cold nights, and remoteness demand careful preparation:

🧥

Clothing Layers

  • Heavyweight down jacket (-20°C rating for nights above 13,000 ft)
  • Moisture-wicking thermal base layers (top and bottom)
  • Windproof fleece mid-layer
  • Waterproof trekking trousers (doubles as rain protection)
  • Wool or synthetic hiking socks × 5 pairs
  • Insulated gloves and a wool beanie
  • Sun hat with full brim (UV at altitude is intense)
  • Gaiters for village walks and minor trail sections
🎒

Essentials

  • Diamox (acetazolamide) for altitude sickness — consult doctor before trip
  • Offline maps downloaded (Maps.me or OsmAnd — no signal in valley)
  • Power bank (2 × 20,000 mAh minimum — electricity unreliable)
  • Cash in plenty — ATMs only in Kaza and Reckong Peo, sometimes out of service
  • Sunscreen SPF 50+ and lip balm with SPF (UV at 12,000 ft is severe)
  • First-aid kit with ibuprofen, antacid, ORS sachets, bandages
  • Water purification tablets or filter straw
  • Spare tyre tools if driving (puncture repair kit, 12V compressor)

Budget & Costs

Spiti is genuinely affordable despite its remote location:

  • 01Homestay accommodation: ₹600–₹1,200 per person per night (meals included in most)
  • 02Hotel/guesthouse in Kaza: ₹1,200–₹3,000 per night
  • 03Self-drive petrol car from Chandigarh (10 days): ₹8,000–₹12,000 fuel
  • 04Hired car + driver from Shimla (10 days): ₹18,000–₹25,000 all-inclusive
  • 05Royal Enfield rental from Manali: ₹1,200–₹1,800 per day
  • 06Food (3 meals): ₹400–₹700 per day per person
  • 07Total 10-day trip budget per person: ₹18,000–₹35,000
⚠️

Altitude Sickness is Real at Spiti

Unlike trek destinations that ascend gradually, road trips through Spiti go from Shimla (7,000 ft) to passes above 14,900 ft in under 2 days. This rapid ascent makes Acute Mountain Sickness (AMS) a serious risk. Symptoms: persistent headache, nausea, loss of appetite, dizziness. If you develop AMS, descend immediately — do not push on hoping it improves. Start Diamox (125mg twice daily) from Reckong Peo onward. Stay hydrated. Avoid alcohol until acclimatised.

"I have driven through 22 countries. The road from Tabo to Dhankar in evening light, the Spiti River 600 metres below and a monastery clinging to the cliff above — that is the most extraordinary 30 km of road I have ever seen." — Suresh Menon, overlander from Hyderabad
