The Kerala backwaters are a world apart. Over 1,500 km of interconnected canals, lakes, rivers, and lagoons weave through the coastal lowlands of Kerala, linking villages, paddy fields, and fishing communities in a network that has served as the region's highway for centuries. Traditional kettuvallam boats — once used to transport rice and coconut — have been converted into floating hotels ranging from basic two-bedroom vessels to luxury five-bedroom barges with sun decks, air-conditioning, and on-board chefs. A houseboat cruise here, even of just one night, is unlike any hotel stay in the world.

Alleppey vs Kumarakom vs Kollam: Which Backwater to Choose?

Kerala's backwaters span a long stretch of coast. Here are the three main departure points and what makes each distinctive:

  • 01Alleppey (Alappuzha) — The most popular embarkation point. Direct access to Vembanad Lake (Kerala's largest), Punnamada Lake, and the Alleppey canals. Best for: first-timers, day cruises, and overnight stays. Largest fleet of houseboats available.
  • 02Kumarakom — Quieter than Alleppey, set on the banks of Vembanad Lake with the Kumarakom Bird Sanctuary adjacent. Best for: honeymooners, luxury houseboat seekers, birdwatching. Fewer budget options.
  • 03Kollam (Quilon) — Southern end of the backwaters, departure point for the famous Alleppey–Quilon 8-hour public boat journey (₹400, runs daily). Best for: budget travellers who want the full length of the backwaters. Less commercialised.

What's Included in a Houseboat Stay

Most standard houseboat packages (overnight, with crew) include:

Standard Inclusions

Welcome drink and snacks on boarding (typically coconut water and banana chips)

All meals: breakfast, lunch, and dinner prepared fresh on board by the boat cook

AC or non-AC bedroom (depending on package tier)

Hot water supply and attached bathroom

Sit-out deck with chairs for watching the backwaters

Life jackets and basic safety equipment

Check-out the following morning after breakfast

The Best Route: Alleppey to Quilon

The Alleppey to Kollam (Quilon) boat journey is considered the finest long-distance backwater experience in Kerala. The government ferry covers 85 km in approximately 8 hours, passing through narrow canals, open lakes, fishing villages, and palm-fringed paddy fields:

  • 01Alleppey boat jetty to Kollam: Departs 10:30 AM daily, arrives ~6:30 PM (₹400 one-way per person)
  • 02Key sights en route: Punnamada Lake, the Champakulam waterways, Kuttanad (Kerala's rice bowl, farmed below sea level), and the final approach through Ashtamudi Lake
  • 03Private houseboat version: Charter an overnight houseboat for the same route — depart Alleppey, stay overnight on the water, arrive Kollam next morning

Sunset & Birdwatching on the Backwaters

The hour before sunset is the backwaters at their most beautiful — golden light on the palm trees, fishermen pulling in nets, white egrets and grey herons fishing along the canal edges. The Kumarakom Bird Sanctuary is home to Siberian cranes, darters, teals, and kingfishers in winter (November–February). Ask your houseboat operator to anchor in an open stretch of Vembanad Lake for the sunset view.

Food on the Houseboat: Kerala Backwater Cuisine

The houseboat cook is one of the experience's highlights. Most cooks specialise in Kerala's coastal cuisine, prepared fresh in the tiny on-board kitchen. Signature dishes to look forward to:

  • 01Karimeen Pollichathu — Pearl spot fish marinated in spices and coconut, wrapped in banana leaf and slow-roasted. The iconic Alleppey dish.
  • 02Prawn Moilee — Prawns in a delicate coconut milk and turmeric broth. Mild, fragrant, and pairs perfectly with Kerala red rice.
  • 03Appam with Ishtu — Lacy fermented rice crepes served with a coconut milk and vegetable stew — the classic Kerala breakfast.
  • 04Fish Curry (Kerala-style) — Raw mango or kudampuli (Garcinia) adds the characteristic sour note to this rich red curry.
  • 05Payasam — A rice or vermicelli dessert made with jaggery and coconut milk — the traditional sweet course.

How to Book & Budget Tips

The houseboat industry in Alleppey has hundreds of operators at wildly varying quality levels. Here is how to navigate it:

  • 01Budget (non-AC): ₹5,000–₹8,000 per night for a 1-bedroom houseboat (2 pax). Meals included. Book 2–3 weeks ahead during Oct–March peak season.
  • 02Mid-range (AC): ₹9,000–₹15,000 per night for a 2-bedroom AC houseboat. Better kitchen, cleaner vessel, more attentive crew.
  • 03Luxury: ₹18,000–₹40,000+ per night for premium houseboats with rooftop decks, Jacuzzi, and premium Kerala cuisine.
  • 04Day cruise option: ₹2,000–₹5,000 for a 6–8 hour day houseboat without overnight stay — good for families with children.
  • 05Book directly through DTPC (District Tourism Promotion Council, Alleppey) or through certified operators to avoid sub-standard vessels.
  • 06Green Palm Houseboats, Punnami Houseboats, and Sree Krishnapadam are consistently recommended operators at the mid-range tier.
⚠️

Important: What to Watch Out For

The Alleppey houseboat industry has both excellent and unreliable operators. Ask to see the vessel before paying in full. Check that the boat has working toilets (some budget boats discharge untreated waste directly into the canals — avoid these). Confirm whether price is per couple or per person — some operators quote confusingly. Always negotiate: listed prices are generally the starting point, not fixed.
